Grŵp Iaith y Felinheli

After the 2011 Census it was discovered that the percentage of people in Felinheli who can speak Welsh had fallen from 72.1% in 2001 to 64.3% in 2011. A group of us, as Felinheli residents have come together to halt the decline.

Our work is supported by hunaniaith which is the Menter Iaith in Gwynedd as well as by the Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council.

For a language to remain sustainable in the long term at least 70% of people living in a community need to speak and use the language day to day.

There are 49 communities in Wales where 70% or more of the people speak Welsh.  Of these 49 communities 40 are in Gwynedd.

Welsh continues to be a vital and living language in Felinheli but it will need the support of everyone in the community for it  to remain at the heart of village life and regain lost ground.

To prevent further decline it is vital that you, as a Welsh speaker who lives in Felinheli share your ideas with us and think of ways that you can personally promote the language.
